Action Research

In order to generate more conclusive data and evidence, SLD, as one of its core strategies, has been engaged in conducting action research on the precarious nature of global supply chains and other human rights challenges experienced by the unorganized sector workers.

Successful publications were added to SLD’s credit this year thereby further strengthening its evidence base. Among the few are ‘Knowledge, Oligopoly and Labour in Global Value Chains’ was published in the June 2020 issue of the Global Labor Journal (online, open-access of the International Sociological Association) and ‘Defining and Achieving Living Wages in the Garment Export Industry’ accepted for publication in Economic and Political Weekly.

Living cost research was one of the projects under the garment workers program in order to develop the living wage figure for India. Survey tools were developed and piloted in different garment production regions for an extensive data collection of the food expenses of garment workers. Key findings and lessons learned from the research were exchanged and discussed with partner organisations and women garment workers during the meetings conducted.
